Incoming freshman need to make themselves stand out, get the highest grades and take the most rigorous courses to stand out. Their stress begins accumulating in high school and is peaked when college applications are due. Only 65.4% of students are accepted, and freshman that enter college are already overworked, from just getting accepted. Despite the awareness, these students are not usually given healthy coping mechanisms for maneuvering through stressful situations.

In order to effectively manage through this change and complexity, leaders, faculty and students need to be able to quickly adapt their thinking, behaviors and strategies, accordingly. In order to do this effectively, they need cutting-edge tools, and one such tool is resilience. Students Aren't Getting Enough Sleep

Because of all the pressure and stress that students put on themselves, they are not getting nearly enough sleep. It's reported that 8 out of 10 students experience frequent high levels of stress. Stress increases cortisol levels and leads to a whole host of other aliments, as well. Stress leads to late nights studying and sleepless nights, due to worrying about performing at peak levels.

Students Are Away From Home From The First Time

First-time students living away at college are at higher risk for stress caused by being away from home for the first time. This in itself is stressful, on top of the heavy course load that they are taking, and pushing themselves to excel. Even the students who do not think they will get homesick experience anxiety caused by living independently of their family. It is hard to leave the comforts of home with family that supports you, for a completely new experience and unchartered territory.
